How to Read Your Tyre Size

The numbers on your tyre sidewall tell us everything we need. Here is how to read them.

Example: 205/55 R16 91V

  • 205 — width in millimetres across the tread.
  • 55 — profile (sidewall height as a % of width).
  • R — radial construction (standard on modern cars).
  • 16 — wheel rim diameter in inches.
  • 91 — load index (max weight per tyre).
  • V — speed rating (V = 149 mph max).

Where to look on the tyre

Your tyre size is moulded into the outer sidewall (the rubber that faces outward when the wheel is on the car). Look for a string of numbers and letters such as 205/55 R16 91V or 225/45 R17 94W.

Other things you might see

  • XL — Extra Load (reinforced sidewalls).
  • M+S — Mud and Snow rated.
  • Snowflake symbol — winter or all-season certified.
  • DOT code — the manufacture date (last 4 digits = week + year).
